Housing disparities and actions to dismantle ambulatory living situations have caused a greater displacement of these transitory versions of living. Rather than posing a solution, these models have ignored the history of variances in shelter. By re-stratifying the layering of housing, a new societal acceptance can put forward solutions in bettering overall living conditions. These very solutions can also aid neighborhoods in historically marginalized communities.
A wider Actor-Network system can aid in the integration of housing solutions at a local level, spawning community supported equitable housing development. This network will be initiated through two hubs, one focused on the manufacturing and pilot integration into near - by neighborhoods, and the other focused on the societal health and communication. By putting these two nodes at either end of the targeted area, an organic communication can begin to stimulate neighborhood growth and expansion into Shared Community Living zones.
Although a substantial focus is set on those neighborhoods and private lots to be part of the larger network, benefits for those who may be inclined to reclusion are still taken into consideration. Investment by community integration and City funding will aid in the overall health of the community, sparking new interests in community investment, propagating the network.
The largest investment will be focused on aiding the acceptance of the lowest portion of the housing strata, allowing an ambivalence in the perceived optimal housing structure. By integrating a model of transitory living, exposure to a healthy form of this lifestyle allows changes in perception. A focus upon the community’s ability to spawn integrating initiatives will facilitate more equitable housing developments. Health and facilitation into a desired mode of housing will be offered, as well as community engagement through construction and training in usable skills for reinvestment into the community.
Re-Stratification of a limiting housing structure will allow integration of a wider range of persons, redefining neighborhood involvement and healthy ambulatory relationships.
Ideas and customs of gathering spaces have contributed to the dismissal of certain kinds of living situations. Transitory lives that is the reality for many individuals in the Bay Area has been shunned to the extremities of the city. This kind of thinking negates transitory lifestyle individuals from getting amenities and services readily available for home owners and renters.
In one of the world’s most expensive retail markets, Oakland desperately needs density in housing. Yet one idea of the privacy of homeowner’s versus the overall good of the society has always been at odds. Incorporation of the transient nature of certain individuals to new spatial possibilities within the emergency housing structure allows for the two to be mitigated. Although they would not be able to simultaneously exist, there is still possibility for a dialogue.
Due to unforeseen events occurring much more frequently, the idea of emergency temporary housing was taken as a central tenement for this project. The idea of a structural network that would be the basis for temporary housing in situations of crisis, while being an anchoring trellis type structure in moments of assurance. Utilizing the trellis structure as a reminder of both moments can help facilitate fluctuation between.
Public showers + health services anchor the entire site by allowing all kinds of living situations from coming into a united area. The idea of sharing spaces of such great intimacy allows for a different perspective to be taken on the sharing of resources. Levels of privacy secure those that are comfortable enough to take part in this socially open space.
